Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 7: Beginning Hour has been downloaded over two million times since its launch during E3 2016.
Despite being made available exclusively to PlayStation Plus owners, the demo set the record for the most downloaded single-player PlayStation 4 demo during its first week in North America.
Beginning Hour isn’t part of the final game, but rather a prologue introducing gamers to the tone that Resident Evil 7 will be taking. The demo sees players trapped in a dilapidated farmhouse from which they must escape, although it contains more than its fair share of secrets and multiple endings.
Resident Evil 7 fully playable in VR, coming to PS4 in early 2017
Capcom lifted the wraps off Resident Evil 7: Biohazard during Sony’s E3 2016 press event, where it confirmed a January 24, 2017 release date for the project on PS4, PC, and Xbox One. The game will also be fully playable from start to finish in PlayStation VR.
Resident Evil 7 takes place from a first-person perspective, and sees gamers investigating a mysterious plantation mansion in rural America. The game isn’t a reboot, and as such takes place after the events of Resident Evil 6 and within the same universe as the main franchise.
Despite the supernatural undertones of Beginning Hour, Capcom has asserted that the game is not a ghost story; it’ll also contain many of the staples of the classic Resident Evil titles, such as herbs, puzzles, and combat.
