Rockstar Games has released the first artwork on the new Red Dead Redemption title ahead of its hotly anticipated reveal this week.
Check out the Red Dead Redemption 2 artwork below.
As you can see from the image, there’s seven characters featured in the artwork, which may or may not point to some sort of multiplayer experience. Then again, perhaps we’ll be able to pick from one of seven playable characters, or even indulge in a spot of co-op campaign? Rockstar’s not saying yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
What will the new Red Dead Redemption be called?
Nothing official has been detailed yet regarding Rockstar’s plans for the long-rumored sequel to 2010’s acclaimed westerner, although there’s been a few names thrown around in the past. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an obvious choice, but we’ve also heard chatter of Red Dead Retribution. That last one seems to have been debunked, however. Still, with seven characters in the frame, how about Red Dead Seven? Has a ring to it, does it not?
Red Dead Redemption Remaster rumored for PS4
Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t the only chatter doing the rounds in regards to Rockstar’s Wild West saga. Earlier this year, it was rumored that the original Red Dead Redemption would be receiving a PS4 and Xbox One overhaul, although nothing has been confirmed at this point. However, the prospect of Rockstar releasing a HD version of Red Dead in anticipation of the a full-blown sequel is definitely not out of the question.
Red Dead Redemption 2 leak
Perhaps the biggest evidence of a Red Dead sequel came in the shape of an image of the game’s map that leaked online earlier this year. Rockstar obviously didn’t comment on the leak, but sources close to the image indicated that the map was a recent art direction asset for the new game. Around the same time, it was also suggested that Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a prequel to John Marston’s adventure seen in the original game.
Red Dead Redemption has shipped over 14 million copies following its launch in May 2010 on PS3 and Xbox 360, so a sequel is always something that’s been in the back of everyone’s mind for some time now. Rockstar has never ruled out the possibility of a follow-up, stating a while back that a sequel is a matter of timing.
Of course, RDR isn’t the first instalment in the western-themed action-adventure series. That honor goes to Red Dead Revolver, which launched on the PS2 and Xbox back in 2004. The game was recently released as part of the PS2 Classics lineup via the PlayStation Store.
With an announcement expected soon, hopefully we’ll get our first glimpse at Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay and a trailer this week.
