Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy 15 has officially gone gold and has confirmed details on the game’s final slice of downloadable content.
Final Fantasy 15 multiplayer DLC coming
The Japanese software giant revealed today that the hotly anticipated JRPG will feature an online-based co-op multiplayer expansion, known as ‘Comrades.’ This particular DLC drop will be released after five other pieces of content: an item pack, a Holiday Pack, and three Episode expansions.
"When we’ve released each of those three [character] episodes, and made each of the three characters playable, we’re going to bring back [lead character] Noctis from the main game, and then add the multiplayer expansion pack which allows you to play as all of them together in new types of online adventures,” Final Fantasy 15 DLC Director, Haruyoshi Sawatari told IGN.

"The stories we’re telling through the DLC are going to be linked closely to the main game’s story, but they’re things that we feel we could only really do within DLC. It couldn’t have been part of the main game at all. So the kind of gameplay experiences that we’re delivering, and the kind of stories that we’re telling really wouldn’t have been possible within the game of XV. It has to be slightly removed in order to do that."
Sawatari-san went on to say that the DLC episodes would feature “new locations to explore” but wouldn’t be drawn into commenting how long they are or in what timeline they are set.
Final Fantasy 15 is the first single-player focused entry in the venerable Japanese series to feature online multiplayer content. The only other games that have done so were of course the MMORPG offerings Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV.
Square Enix has set a Final Fantasy 15 release date of November 29, 2016 for PS4 and Xbox One following a brief delay from September. Fans of the series will know that the project has been a long time coming, as it was originally announced over 10 years ago as the PS3-exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
