SEGA has announced that Sonic Forces, the next chapter in its venerated platforming franchise starring the plucky Blue Blur, will launch on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Switch in holiday 2017.
This latest series installment sees a return to the 3D platforming antics of Sonic Adventure and various other post-Dreamcast entries, and sees Sonic spin-dashing his way through a city ravaged by Death Egg Sentinels. From the look of the Sonic Forces trailer below, all the usual staples appear to be in place, including power-ups and loops, so hopefully we’re on track for a solid Sonic outing.
Much like Sonic Generations (which is probably the best Sonic title in over a decade), Sonic Forces will feature two incarnations of the Spiky Speedster: One based on his ‘classic’ appearance from the 90s, and the latter taking on a more ‘modern’ aesthetic witnessed in recent titles. The game is in development at Sonic Team, who also worked on both Generations and Sonic Colors.
In addition to Sonic Forces, SEGA is also prepping a new 2D title known as Sonic Mania, which will arrive on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Switch in summer 2017. Unlike Sonic Forces, this game recalls the classic Sega Genesis Sonic games, featuring revamped stages including Green Hill Zone, classic power-ups, and multiple playable characters including Tails and Knuckles. Sonic Mania was originally pegged for a spring launch.
