Insomniac Games has touched on the possibility of a Spyro the Dragon PS4 remaster, stating any such project would be firmly down to publisher Activision.
The Resistance: Fall of Man developer was quizzed about the chance of remastering its 2000 title Spyro: Year of the Dragon on Twitter, to which it responded:
“That’s up to Activision, and like Naughty Dog didn’t do the Crash port, we probably wouldn’t do Spyro ourselves,” said the studio. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, seeing as how remasters are typically outsourced to specialised companies, such as Bluepoint Games, who handled Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection for PS4 among many others.
Spyro the Dragon remains one of the most popular gaming franchises from the late 90s, debuting for the original PlayStation back in 1998. Two sequels followed; Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Much like Crash Bandicoot however, the franchise changed hands many times following the PSOne trilogy, with original developer Insomniac Games moving on to new endeavours including Ratchet & Clank for the PS2.
While the games were initially published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Spyro was picked up by numerous publishers from 2000 onwards, including Konami, Universal Studios, Sierra Entertainment, and finally Activision, who took over rights to the IP in 2008 to develop a brand new trilogy known as The Legend of Spyro. The final entry in the series to date, Dawn of the Dragon, shipped in November 2008 for PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS.
Nothing official has been announced regarding a remaster for the PS4, although Sony seems to be teasing something in the pipeline.
