Destiny was criticised for its lack of a cohesive narrative, something which was compounded by Bungie’s decision to negate much of its lore to online-based Grimoire cards. Now, the studio has said that it’s hoping gamers will complain about Destiny 2’s story, but only because there’s so much of it this time around.
This time around, the former Halo developer has placed a greater emphasis on narrative, eschewing the Grimoire Cards in favor of in-game lore, making for a much tighter narrative. That’s not including what’s in store for the game’s expansions, which will begin rolling out in 2018.
"Destiny 1 in a way was foundational," the game’s cinematic lead, Matthew Ward, told IGN. "It was meant to set up the world and ask a lot of questions, but not necessarily deliver too many answers. But leave enough out there for us to build upon."
"We’re learning from and listening to all the feedback we got on Destiny 1, and we’re applying it," he continued. "I hope people complain about how much story we have. That’d be the Reddit thread I’d like to read. ‘Too much damn story [makes angry typing gesture].’"
Meanwhile, the game’s senior narrative lead, Jason Harris, said that the developer “spent a lot of time” building the franchise world as a whole. “I can’t emphasise enough that we are now ready to tell stories in this world. Big, expansive, cinematic stories,” he said.
"I think players are ultimately going to see a wide variety of story channels, an eclectic number of outlets to see story infused throughout the game; top to bottom, soup to nuts. There is story everywhere," he said.
Destiny 2 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017, with a PC version following in October. Bungie confirmed the Destiny 2 beta start times earlier today, so be sure to make sure you have your PS4 pre-order in to gain early access to the teaser. If you haven’t made the transition to Sony’s latest home console, then think about investing in this Glacier White PS4 Pro bundle, which comes with a copy of Bungie’s latest shooter.
