Ryu ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA have announced that a brand new Virtua Fighter game is in production, confirming previous reports from an interview with with the company’s transmedia boss that the franchise was making a comeback.
The Virtua Fighter franchise is a legendary IP, with the original entry in the series debuting in 1993 and leading the charge in 3D fighting games. The series is known for its realistic fighting mechanics, varied roster of characters, and vibrant backdrops, and was a staple of the arcade scene for years and also was a major pillar in SEGA’s home console lineups.

The fact we’re getting a new Virtua Fighter is a huge deal, as the franchise has been sitting around doing pretty much nothing since 2006, with SEGA content to issue updated version of Virtua Fighter 5.
