New Virtua Fighter Game Is In Development, SEGA’s Transmedia Boss Has Revealed

SEGA has casually announced during a recent interview that it has a new entry in the Virtua Fighter series in development alongside the previously-confirmed revivals of Crazy, Jet Set Radio, and Shinobi.

Justin Scarpone, who serves as global head of transmedia for SEGA, made the comments during a chat with VGC about the company’s plans to revive its legacy IPs, which forms part of a wide strategy to expand its key franchises into multimedia territories. Unfortunately, no further details were revealed on the new Virtua Fighter, but this is the first time we’ve heard of any plans to revive the franchise.

We have a suite of titles in development right now; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed.

SEGA had previously revealed that it would be bringing back its classic IP with new titles, and has already confirmed that it is working on a movie adaptation of Shinobi with Universal Pictures. One of the legacy franchises, Streets of Rage, has already seen a new entry after 26 years with Streets of Rage 4, but the new title is set to be a 3D fighting affair.

Back in July this year it was reported that the new Crazy Taxi video game will take the form of an open-world multiplayer effort, although details have yet to be confirmed by SEGA.
