Americans prefer gaming to moviegoing

Americans cannot get enough gaming, at least according to statistics from a recent NPD Research report. It states that 63 percent of Americans have played video games in the past six months, while 53 percent went to the movies in the same time period.

Of course, neither form of entertainment comes close to music’s nearly universal acceptance (94 percent), but this is good news for the video game industry. Already over the past year we’ve heard reports of games outselling DVDs and Blu-rays, and the NPD report shows the video game industry is growing stronger with the average gamer spending about $38 a month on all things related to gaming..

"Video games account for one-third of the average monthly consumer spending in the U.S. for core entertainment content, including music, video, games," states Anita Frazier, video games industry analyst for NPD. "While a portion of that share stems from the premium price of console games, we’re also seeing an overall increase in the number of people participating in gaming year-over-year."
