According to a report on The Tracking Board, New Agency is planning a sequel to the as-yet released Assassin’s Creed movie adaptation, which hits cinemas in December 2016.
Not only is a follow-up to the film in the works, but Michael Fassbender is also reportedly on board the new movie as a central character and producer, echoing the X-Men star’s role in the original film.
"That the studio is already laying the groundwork for the sequel is hardly surprising, given the international appeal of both the game and its star, Fassbender," reads the report. "But skeptics of video game-based films may interpret this move as a sign of confidence from those involved that, unlike previous attempts to bring popular video game properties to the big screen, Assassin’s Creed could not only work–but thrive."
Assassin’s Creed opens in cinemas on December 21, 2016. In addition to Fassbender, the movie features appearances from Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Marion Cotillard.
Over on the video game front, Ubisoft has announced that Assassin’s Creed series is taking a break in 2016, with only the spin-off Chronicles trilogy seeing a release this year. Rumors have suggested the franchise will return in 2017 with Assassin’s Creed Empires, which will take place in ancient Egypt.
Video game to movie adaptations haven’t had a great reputation over the years, with the likes of Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Tekken, Alone in the Dark and Tomb Raider being panned by critics and gamers alike. However, Sony’s Resident Evil films have seen great financial success despite poor reviews, with the series concluding with 2017’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
