Matt Ryan, the voice actor for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway, has revealed that Ubisoft threatened to sue him for hinting that a remake of the swashbuckling adventure game is in the works.
As previously reported, Ryan was seen on video signing merchandise for fans where he was asked asked about a possible remaster of Black Flag. In response, Ryan sheepishly shrugged off the suggestion, but has now revealed that his reaction landed him in hot water with Ubisoft.
Well, the thing is that when it happened, someone was doing this [secretly filming Ryan] and I was being very free and open. But I didn’t know that they actually were recording me on their phone. Then the company [presumably Ubisoft] threatened to sue me.

Ubisoft hasn’t announced an Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake yet, but rumours of the game have been doing the rounds for a while now. Back in January 2024, it was revealed on the LinkedIn profile of an artist working at Ubisoft Singapore that the Black Flag remake entered production in September 2023.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was released in 2013 for PS4, PS3, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. The game takes place during the Golden Age of Piracy many years before the events of Assassin’s Creed III, and follows Kenway as he becomes embroiled in the long-running battle between the Assassins Brotherhood and the Templar Order, while brushing shoulders with historic figures including the legendary pirate, Black Beard.
