Bloodborne prepares for The Old Hunters with huge 9GB patch on PS4

Sony has released a brand new patch for Bloodborne in preparation for the upcoming expansion The Old Hunters.

The update isn’t exactly a minor one, though; it clocks in at a massive 9.376GB on your PlayStation 4 hard drive. Aside from prepping the critically acclaimed dungeon crawler for the upcoming Old Hunters DLC, it also introduces other crucial changes outside of the impending expansion.

Chief among these includes the all-new Covenant known as The Federation that gamers can join, plus a series of fresh NPCs that populate Yharnam to aid players in co-op. The Chalice Dungeons have also benefitted from some tweaking, while matchmaking has undergone some subtle poking and prodding to boot.

The Old Hunters is due out on November 24 and has already begun pre-loading for those who have pre-ordered the hotly anticipated content pack. In addition, Bloodborne will be receiving a Game of the Year Edition re-release later this month that includes The Old Hunters—the ideal purchase for those who have yet to step into From Software’s brutal, gothic-inspired game world.

In related news, the developer behind Bloodborne is heavily rumoured to be working on a PS4-exclusive JRPG. Nothing official has been confirmed as of yet, although perhaps we’ll hear something at the upcoming PlayStation Experience event in December? We’ll keep you posted. While not technically part of the same series, Bloodborne is seen as a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, incorporating many elements from the cult classic PS3 title. Set from a third-person viewpoint, Bloodborne has players controlling a mysterious hero known as The Hunter, who battles a series of grotesque creatures within the gothic-inspired city of Yharnam, the inhabitants of which have fallen victim to a blood-born disease—hence the game’s title. Similar to the ‘Souls’ series, Bloodborne is also known for its brutal difficulty, although some have observed that it isn’t quite as taxing as its spiritual predecessors.

Bloodborne was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, who also directed Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. Despite only serving as Supervisor for the sequel, Miyazaki-san will return to the ‘Souls’ franchise with the upcoming PS4 and Xbox One title, Dark Souls 3 in 2016. Prior to that, he was best known for working on the long-running Armored Core franchise.
