A series of new job listings posted by Bungie has indicated the former Halo developer may shift from the Tiger Engine to Unreal Engine 5 for its new IP.
Many of the job openings require experience with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, suggesting the company is looking to shift away from its own gam engine. One in particular, for a Game Engineering Lead, mentions “Unreal [Engine] “ and reveals the successful candidate will work on a “new IP and a new genre at Bungie” featuring “lighthearted and whimsical characters.”
Would you like to work on a new IP and new genre at Bungie that combines amazing action feel with lighthearted and whimsical characters? Are you excited to work on joyful PvP combat and action gameplay?
The Tiger Engine has been used by Bungie to power a number of its major titles including Destiny 2, and while it has been steady improved and optimised over the years, Unreal Engine 5 is probably far more attractive going forward as developers will look to really push the PS5’s hardware capabilities.
Bungie hasn’t announced many details about its new IP, although the studio previously said that it aims to launch at least one new IP by 2025.
A number of job listings in the past have given us a few hints as to what to expect from the new game. One suggests it will include competitive PvP multiplayer (not surprising given Bungie’s history), while another dating back to June 2020 reveals it will be a comedic RPG loot-shooter.
