Activision has released a statement confirming that the Call of Duty franchise will no longer see back-to-back releases of the Black Ops and Modern Warfare franchise.
This comes as part of the team’s plans to offer a “unique experience” every year, and hopes to offer innovation that is “meaningful, not incremental.”
- We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games. The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.

Beyond that, the statement confirmed that Call of Duty Black Ops 7 will be offering a free trial and Double XP weekend next week, and will shape its seasonal updates based on community feedback.

Call of Duty Black Ops 7 was released for PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One, although a report by Alinea Analytics has stated that the franchise has been ‘underperforming‘ this year due to a number of factors including increased competition. In addition, Black Ops 7’s European launch sales were reportedly 63% below those of leading rival Battlefield 6, and critical reception to the game proved lukewarm.
