Confirmed: Sony to sell Cell to Toshiba

Despite reports to the contrary, it has emerged today that Sony Corp. will be selling the company’s advanced processing chip operations to Japanese electronics giant, Toshiba.

As reported by Engadget, Sony is expected to make an official announcement regarding the move later today, which will allow the company to focus more on its core business operations.

Toshiba will now have complete manufacturing responsibilities over the PS3’s highly acclaimed Cell processor, in a deal that Japan’s Nikkei has said is worth an estimated 100 billion yen (USD 858) and is expected to be completed by March 2008.

We’ll have more details as they become available.
