Crysis 2 confirmed for consoles

Electronic Arts has today confirmed some great news for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gamers. Courtesy of Crytek’s multiplatform CryENGINE 3 technology, the next installment in the previously PC-exclusive Crysis series will be coming to Sony and Microsoft’s platform.

“The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it’s the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryENGINE 3.

Originally, Crytek claimed that the PS3 and Xbox 360 wouldn’t be able to handle the processing power required to run Crysis efficiently. However, the developer is building the sequel from the ground-up specifically for home consoles, so it’s going to be very interesting to see whether it will be one of the few games to really harness the power of the PS3 to bring top quality results. Guerrilla Games did it with Killzone 2 and we’d put money on Crytek achieving similar results.

We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground at E3 this week for any further information.
