Capcom has gone on a trademark filing rampage recently, with the likes of Cyberbot, Dino Crisis, Power Stone, and Tech Romancer popping up online. Does this mean anything? Possibly. Then again, it could just be Capcom doing the whole patent protection thing.
Still, any time Dino Crisis comes up, we’re hopeful that Capcom may one day decide to bring it back from the dead.
Dino Crisis & More Trademarks Filed By Capcom
Capcom has been pretty big into remasters of the past five years or so, with Resident Evil in particular getting lots of attention. We’ve had Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil 6 ported to current-generation systems, while Resident Evil 2 received a full-blown remake.
The company also confirmed that it is remaking Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, with the game arriving on April 3, 2020. So yeah, as you can see, nostalgia is a big part of its game plan right about now.
So what of the games mentioned in the patent filings? Cyberbots was released in arcades back in 1995, and was ported to the PlayStation and Sega Saturn two years later. The console version was not released outside of Japan, however.
Dino Crisis meanwhile, well, that hardly needs much introduction. The original game came out in 1999 and utilised 3D backgrounds, but otherwise played quite similarly to Resident Evil, albeit with dinos instead of zombies looking to tear lumps out of you.
Capcom launched a follow-up, Dino Crisis 2, for the PSOne back in 2000, and Dino Crisis 3 was released as an Xbox-exclusive in 2003. Outside of the spin-off Dino Stalkers however, the franchise has been on hiatus ever since. Sob.
Power Stone was released for the Dreamcast back in 1999, and became one of the best multiplayer titles for Sega’s much-loved console. It got a sequel and PSP bundle in 2000 and 2006, respectively, but hasn’t done anything since.
Let’s hope at least one of those titles trademarked actually turns into a full-fledged project, eh?
