DC Universe Online to be free-to-play next month

Superhero MMO DC Online Universe will become a free-to-play title starting this October on PlayStation 3 and PC, Sony Online Entertainment has announced.

Apparently, the decision wasn’t due to a decline in subscribers, but rather the fact the game ultimately cost more than the developers had anticipated.

“In terms of ‘Is it a result in a drop in subs’ – absolutely not,” SOE’s Lorin Jameson told IGN.

“This is the right business model. If I can be honest, the game ended up costing a lot more than we thought it would, and this was our preferred business model from day one.”

Those of you who play free will have access to on-going gameplay in DC Online Universe, including Gotham City and Metropolis, plus raids and alert. Various content packs and updates will also be available, as well as additional character slots and powers.

Meanwhile, premium players – that is, those who have attained the status by spending over $5 – will gain more than free players, such as extra character slots, more inventory slots and increased cash limits.

Lastly, those of you who have reached Legendary status (which will cost $14.99 per month) will bag all the goodies detailed above, in addition to all DLC for no extra cost, over 15 character slots, 80 inventory slots and the ability to generate leagues with no size restrictions.
