Death Stranding news: Kojima confirms work on PS4-exclusive is ‘going well’

Hideo Kojima has provided some brief but much-welcomed Death Stranding news during his appearance at the Tribeca Games Festival over the weekend.

As reported by Engadget, Kojima-san was asked how the project is shaping up, to which he responded that development is “going pretty well,” adding "It’s moving on PS4… Overall, [we] have the general plan for the project, there’s a plot."

The Kojima Productions boss added that the team is currently testing out various systems for the hotly anticipated PS4-exclusive, including characters and environment. Kojima compared development to an Italian restaurant, saying that he’s now focusing on what kinds of tables would be there and what’s on the menu.

Elsewhere, he also expressed interest in virtual reality gaming:  "A photo has always been something that’s been a frame. A painting has always been a frame. 130 years ago Lumier brothers created movies and that was also in a frame," he said. "The media so far has always been about what kind of information you can put inside a frame. This goes the same for games, they’re very interactive. In an FPS, you can move around, but it’s still about what kind of information you can put inside that frame."

Death Stranding release date due before 2019

Death Stranding was announced during Sony’s E3 2016 press conference by Kojima himself, who made a brief appearance on stage to a rapturous applause. While a release date has yet to be announced for the project, Kojima has said that the game will arrive in stores at some point before 2019. He’s also assured gamers that the game is not a next-gen title and will arrive on PS4, although has mused over the possibility of a sequel. It won’t, however, feature multiple endings.

While we’ve yet to catch our first glimpse at any Death Stranding gameplay, the team has said that the Norman Reedus-starring actioner will feature open-world and multiplayer elements. The game is being powered by the Decima Engine, which is the same tech utilised by Guerrilla Games for the critically acclaimed Horizon: Zero Dawn.
