Destiny 2 dev starting to ‘look beyond’ the series

Bungie has revealed during an interview with the BBC that it is starting to ‘look beyond’ the Destiny franchise.

While the former Halo developer is very much busy with the science-fiction franchise at present – Destiny 2 has only just been released, after all – co-founder Jason Jones admitted it’s "starting in a small way to look at what’s beyond Destiny."

Every time you do a new thing to surprise and delight people you risk being ignored.” He added: “you could make your hand very tired writing down all the risks going into a new game project, but unless you’re taking risks then you’re not going to do something people care about.”

While Bungie might be thinking about its next game, Destiny isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Aside from the fact Destiny 2 will be supported by extensive post-launch content (at least two major expansions are planned), the series itself is supposedly on a 10-year plan.

Earlier this year, Nolan North, who voices Ghost in the shared-world shooter, let slip that Bungie already has ideas brewing for the inevitable Destiny 3.

The original Destiny was released in 2014 and received four major expansions over three years: The Dark Below, House of Wolves, The Taken King, and Rise of Iron.

In addition, Bungie also released a number of smaller, time-based events such as the Sparrow Racing League and Festival of the Lost to keep players entertained.

As such, while only two expansion are currently in the pipeline for Destiny 2, there’s nothing to say that Bungie doesn’t have more plans for the sequel over the next few years.

Elsewhere in the interview, Jones spoke of the criticisms that gamers had over the original game, including the poor storytelling.

As such, this is one of the reasons why the sequel has a far greater emphasis on narrative, with a larger amount of in-game cutscenes dedicated to telling the story.
