Activision confirmed overnight that the Destiny 2 release date is still targeting a 2017 window for PS4 and Xbox One, while strongly hinting that a PC release is on the cards for the upcoming shared-world shooter.
While the publishing giant is keeping much of the game’s plot and details close to its chest, it has teased that Destiny 2 will be more accessible to casual gamers, and that we can expect a host of memorable characters. We’ve already heard murmurs that the game’s plot will incorporate the likes of Xur, Agent of the Nine and the Cryptarch, so this may be what Activision is hinting at.
"The cornerstone of that is a great cinematic story," said Activision’s Eric Hirshberg. "That’s been a real focus with a great cast of memorable, relatable characters, coupled with some very nice ways to make the game more accessible to a casual player, without losing anything that our core players love.
"We’ve made it more accessible to someone who just wants to have a great more casual first-person action experience."
Activision went on to say (via PC Gamer) that the aim of Destiny 2 is to “broaden the franchise’s global reach,” which highly suggests the game may be heading to the PC. The original Destiny did not see a PC release, although it was a cross-generation launch for PlayStation and Xbox formats. If Destiny 2 is indeed coming to home computers, then the next logical step for the series would be cross-platform play, at the very least between the PC and Xbox versions. However, is there a possibility we may see PS4 incorporated too?
According to previous reports, Destiny 2 DLC is already being prepped and the first major expansion is pencilled in for a late 2018 release. Activision has already said that the sequel will not suffer from the same content droughts that plagued the original following its September 2014 release.
