Destin Legarie has posted a new video claiming that Destiny 2 developer Bungie at one point pitched a subscription model for the shared-world shooter that was ‘vehemently shot down’ by management.
Bungie has been at the centre of controversy lately in regards to its new title, Marathon, after the developer was accused by Fern Hook, a Scottish artist, of taking assets from her previous work and using it in the game’s Alpha without her permission. In response, Bungie claimed that an-ex staff was responsible for actually taking Hook’s work.

The video mentions a “toxic work environment” at Bungie and reveals that they pitched a subscription model for Destiny, with one ex-staff member stating “everything happening to Bungie is because of greed.” At one stage, the player-earned cosmetic items were almost scrapped by bosses as they were concerned that these items would impact micro transaction sales.
The original Destiny was released in 2014 for PS4 and Xbox One, and was followed by numerous expansions over the next couple of years. Meanwhile, Destiny 2 arrived for PS4 and Xbox One in September 2017, and was again supported by many expansions that continues to this day. The game adopted a free-to-play model in 2019.
Marathon is pencilled in for release on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on September 23, 2025.
