Devcom 2024 Survey Finds Nearly 90% Of Devs Feel Microtransactions Are Not Needed In Premium Games

Nearly 90% of developers that took place in a survey at Devcom 2024 agreed that premium games do not need microtransactions.

Taking place in Cologne, Germany ahead of GamesCom this week, Devcom 2024 had 300 speakers in attendance, with 100 of them taking part in the survey. Of that total, 89% agreed that AAA video games can be “financially successful just by being Buy-to-Play.” Meanwhile, 65% of those surveyed backed a physical and digital model for premium titles.

Oddly enough, one person felt that a free-to-play model featuring in-game ads was worth pursing in the games industry.

The survey also revealed a few other interesting tidbits, such as 31% of developers preferring to have only a small amount of AI application in game production, while 21% were interested in using AI to help with coding and general production to increase speed of development. Elsewhere, 55% of those surveyed feel one of the challenges facing the industry is market saturation while 46% believe it is rising development costs.

Finally, the subject of layoffs was also broached in the survey, with 57% of developers feeling that layoffs will continue at the same current pace or even higher over the next year. Conversely, 43% feel that layoffs will decrease in the same time frame.
