E3 2014: Mass Effect 4 details trickle out of BioWare, sequel will feature nods to previous games

The studio behind the critically-lauded Mass Effect trilogy has revealed that the next chapter in the science-fiction RPG franchise will contain subtle nods to the previous games, though made it clear this is a new beginning for the series.

Speaking during an interview with GameTrailers, BioWare’s Aaryn Flynn remained surprisingly coy as to where the game will be set. However, he made it clear those who enjoyed Commander Shepard’s exploits won’t be left in the cold.

"I can’t get into that too much. We’ve got a really cool idea for how we’re going to carry on – keep the trilogy separate but at the same time give a bunch of nods to fans who enjoyed the trilogy in the past," said Flynn.

"That’s all going to come out soon."

Shepard is already confirmed not to return in the game. But what about other characters, such as the fan-favorite Garrus and Tali? BioWare’s still keeping mum, sadly.

"Hmm," mused Flynn. "Definitely returning races. It wouldn’t be a Mass Effect game without the krogans – we showed a krogan today."

BioWare briefly teased Mass Effect 4 during Electronic Arts press conference on Monday, though aside from a few tantalizing pieces of artwork, we didn’t really get to see much. However, judging by comments from the development team during the ‘trailer,’ it’s clear the game will be nothing short of ambitious.

The company previously said the game was in the middle stages of development.
