Epic Games Boss Addresses Unreal Engine 5 Performance Issues, Suggests Devs Are Not Optimising Properly

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, has stated his belief that Unreal Engine 5‘s poor performance on select hardware is down to developers not properly optimising the technology.

Korean website This Is Game quotes Sweeney addressing claims of poor performance of Unreal Engine 5 during a roundtable interview during the Unreal Fest in Seoul, South Korea recently. Specifically, the Epic Games boss was asked if the studio is going to take steps to address the issues.

The primary reason why Unreal Engine 5-based games don’t run smoothly on certain PCs or GPUs is the development process. Many developers develop games for high-end hardware, then perform optimization and testing on lower-spec devices in the final stages of development.

Of course, optimization is by no means an easy task, it’s a very challenging one. Ideally, optimization should be implemented early in development, before full-scale content build begins. We are preparing two major solutions to address this issue. One is to strengthen Unreal Engine support. Optimization requires significant manual effort, so we plan to provide automated optimization features for various devices, making the process faster and easier for developers.

The other is to strengthen developer training. In addition to providing education on the overall testing and optimization process, it’s crucial to raise awareness of the importance of early optimization. If necessary, our engineers can provide direct intervention to raise awareness of optimization techniques and provide technical assistance.

The Unreal Engine 5 is a powerful engine that is responsible for powering a number of PS5 games, including Black Myth: Wukong, Borderlands 4, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, The First Descendant, Gears of War Reloaded, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Silent Hill 2 Remake, Tekken 8, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, Wuchang: Fallen Features, and many more.
