Ex-Dragon Age 4 Executive Producer Isn’t Keen On The Phrase ‘BioWare Magic’

Mark Darrah, the former executive producer on BioWare’s highly anticipated Dragon Age 4, has posted a new video on his YouTube channel where he makes it clear he’s not too fond of the old phrase ‘BioWare magic.’

Darrah’s seven-minute video touches on what the BioWare magic actually means at the Mass Effect creators, and uses an amusing hockey stick analogy. He comments that game development as a whole is similar to the curve on a hockey stick, in that it ramps up towards the end, resulting in crunch periods.

According to Darrah, this is what’s behind the phrase BioWare magic, and he’s obviously not too chuffed about the saying still being used at BioWare following his departure. He did, however, make it clear that BioWare is not the only example of where this process happens, as many studios experience crunch.

Still, using the phrase BioWare magic as a selling point for the studio is a direct contributor to crunch periods, which obviously isn’t a good thing when you think of all the horror stories we’ve heard about this practice at developers.
