Rest easy guys and gals, Dogmeat cannot die in Fallout 4. So you can stop worrying about getting in extra tissues and needlessly buying a real dog out of illogical guilt.
In a tweet from Bethesda’s Todd Howard, he simply stated this…

In Fallout 3 you could bypass ever owning Dogmeat, but if you did get him to join you Super Mutant hunting party, he could easily end up as another guest spot in All Dogs Go to Heaven 74 and that makes many people very sad because animals continue to draw more empathy than actual human beings.
In Fallout 4, your four-legged friend is seemingly a more central part of the game, and as such it seems he’s immune from death. Best guess is he may get knocked out for a bit if you lead him into particularly dangerous situations.
Meanwhile, we are still awaiting comment from Bethesda as to why there is such a pro-dog agenda in Fallout when it is pretty obvious cats would be better in an apocalypse.
