Final Fantasy 16’s Combat Won’t Satisfy Everyone, Admits The Game’s Producer

The producer behind Final Fantasy 16 has conceded that the game’s combat is unlikely to appeal to everyone, having previously revealed that the sequel will utilise a more action-based approach as opposed to the traditional turn-based brawling.

Speaking with Comic Days, Naoki Yoshida revealed that the development team are eager to reach a wide audience with Final Fantasy 16, in particular the younger generation of gamers.

We want the world, especially the younger generation, to play the game,” he said, stating that a large chunk of players in their late teens and late twenties have heard of the Final Fantasy franchise, but not actually played it.

Also, the mainstream games nowadays are intuitive games where you press a button and the character shoots a gun or wields a sword, and the traditional RPG style of turn-based command fighting is no longer familiar to them.

It is also a fact that people are becoming less familiar with the old-fashioned style of RPGs, where you fight by selecting turn commands. That’s why the battles in Final Fantasy 16 are very action-based. We want to make people all over the world think that Final Fantasy is a great game.

Of course, I don’t think we’ll be able to satisfy everyone’s demands, so I’ve told everyone on the team that the first thing we need to do is to make something we think is fun, and make sure it reaches the people who like it.

Yoshida-san previously revealed that making an open-world version of Final Fantasy 16 would take a considerable number of years to develop. He also heaped praise on the power of Sony’s PS5, in particularly its ‘super-fast loading times.’

Final Fantasy 16 is currently in development for PS5 and PC and is scheduled to ship in Summer 2023.
