Final Fantasy XI sequel to showcase at E3 2009?

According to the January 2009 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (as generously scanned in by Gamespot forumites), Square-Enix will be showing off the sequel to long-lived MMORPG Final Fantasy XI at next year’s E3.

The new game – code-named "Rapture" in some circles – is "designed to coexist with (i.e. not replace)" its predecessor. FFXI Producer Hiromichi Tanaka told EGM that the "next-generation MMO that we’re working on is going to be different than Final Fantasy XI. And even though we have the same staff working on the project, we’re not going to make something that’ll be exactly like FFXI."

Back in 2006, IGN reported that "Rapture" was in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Little else is known of the game, including how exactly (or if at all) it relates to other Final Fantasy universes.
