Well, there we have it – summer’s arrived, and half a year’s worth of gaming is already behind us. Unfortunately, that means only one thing; we’re about to enter the perpetually dry and dismal July/August period, where sub-standard games come in abundance as companies tirelessly attempt to cash-in on the latest summer blockbusters and popular TV franchises. In other words, don’t expect too many games scrapping it out for your hard-earned cash anytime soon, at least, not until fall comes knocking.
Indeed, June played host to a particularly noticeable dip in quality in comparison to previous months, though it wasn’t all bad news; there were still a couple of diamonds in the rough worth checking out, such as the engaging Singularity and commendable sports romp, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2011. Hell, even Toy Story: The Video Game proved enjoyable enough. Nonetheless, this wasn’t the traditional triple-A onslaught we have become accustomed to over the past couple of months.
While we weren’t spoilt for choice, PSU Towers ultimately settled with Raven Software’s Singularity, which proved by far the most compelling title of the past month, offering sumptuous visuals, gripping narrative and impressive multiplayer component. Sure, it may look a little generic at first glance, but Raven ultimately surprised us, delivering a thoroughly enjoyable shooter. “It’s clear that Raven Software has tried hard to create an all-round enjoyable experience, and it’s really paid dividends. Blowing heads and limbs off soldiers has never been so much fun and the uncluttered HUD, coupled with the pacy gameplay lends in hand in providing a level of immersion that will soon have you plowing through the game without even looking at the clock. Singularity has really surprised us. It feels like you’re playing a classic shooter from many years ago, and we love that.”
