Speaking at the Paley International Council Summit earlier this week, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two, discussed the potential that generative AI has in improving the effectiveness of non-playable characters in video games.
AI is a controversial topic these days, but Strauss reckons that NPCs can become ‘really interesting and fun’ as a result of advancements being made with the technology.
Everyone’s working on that. You’re a playable character, you’re interacting with the non-playable character. That interaction is currently scripted. And the non-playable characters are generally not very interesting. You could imagine all the NPCs becoming really interesting and fun.
Zelnic, wouldn’t be drawn into commenting on whether Grand Theft Auto 6 would implement generative AI, simply adding:
I can confirm that Rockstar is working on the next iteration of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. More than that comes from Rockstar.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will receive its first trailer in early December, which points to a possible reveal at The Game Awards. Elsewhere, Zelnick revealed during Take-Two’s latest earnings call that GTA 6 is ‘completely protected‘ by any potential actors strike.
