Sony Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that Cory Barlog will not be directing the upcoming God of War Ragnarok, with Eric Williams instead heading up the project.
Speaking during a post-PlayStation Showcase interview yesterday evening, the duo revealed that it’s customary for the studio to switch up directors across games, although in Barlog’s case, he directed two – God of War 2 and God of War (2018).
Williams is no stranger to the head-ripping franchise however, having worked on every instalment in the series as a combat designer.
It’s always been a tradition here at Santa Monica, to change the directors across the games. We’ve had really good success with that. Corey is the only repeat director and rightfully so: he’s damn good at what he does.
So, what is Barlog working on? He wouldn’t say, but did let slip that the studio has some exciting things in the pipeline.

We’re actually doing a bunch of stuff… it’s really exciting. All of the things that we’re doing and you’re tempted to know what is this, but I don’t really have anything I can talk about right now specifically, mostly because we’re really focused on God of War Ragnarök.
God of War Ragnarok is scheduled for release on PS4 and PS5 in 2022. You can check out the first gameplay footage of the sequel here.
