How to Enjoy Married Life as a Gamer

Gamers are often stereotyped as loners who are okay with being single all their lives. That’s far from the truth because gaming nerds are just as capable of being in romantic relationships to the point of settling down with the perfect partner. Even professional players can enjoy fruitful and satisfying lives with partners regardless of whether they’re gamers themselves.

It’s all a matter of making the relationship work without compromising your love for gaming. Consider it impossible since it’s a given that you shouldn’t put everything else above family life. However, in most cases, you can still nurture your marriage and find time to play when you can make the right decisions with the time you have. The guide below might not be true to all, but it should help you manage your life as a gamer and a loving partner and take your marriage to the next level!

1. Communication and Understanding

It might be challenging to settle down with a non-gamer but being able to address this difference while you are still dating should make things easier. The key to a good marriage life is always communication. Even if you know your partner from the inside and out, you may still experience moments of friction. You can overcome this by being transparent and honest with each other.

This would involve setting aside intimate time to talk about the problems you face and plans you still want to pursue. Other than that, you also need to be open about your gaming habits and allow your partner to talk about their effects on your relationship recently. This allows you to address potential problems and solve them at the earliest.

2. Time Management

When you’ve settled down with your special someone, you may need to sacrifice time for more important things, from doing the laundry to taking the kids out for soccer practice. This does not entirely mean that you should abandon gaming altogether. You can still enjoy a session of War Thunder if you can manage your free time properly.

This would take a lot of discipline to strike the perfect balance between your marriage life and your life as a gamer. Block out time during the weekends and ask your partner to give you space for just an hour to unwind and hold a controller. That way, you’d still be a gamer without ignoring your responsibilities at home.

3. Sharing the Joy

Instead of treating gaming as your domain, consider getting your partner to play with you. Especially if their love language anchors on quality time, they would love to be your player two and understand the fun in gaming.

Just be patient when you teach them the controls and support them as they get the hang of it. Don’t be competitive, but focus on the fact that you’re enjoying each other’s company as you blast zombies to oblivion or survive a cyberpunk city.

4. Recognizing Addiction

Lacking intimacy and communication in your marriage will lead you toward seeing video games as a coping mechanism. An individual has no choice but to file for divorce when they feel that their partner has developed an addiction to a hobby and that no amount of counseling will ever work.

While video games aren’t the same as drugs and alcohol, you should know that they could upend your marriage when gaming becomes the only thing that matters. With that being said, you should recognize when you’ve gone down a deep hole as a gamer. The sooner you do this, the better you are protecting your marriage from an impending split.

Endnote

Don’t think that you won’t enjoy married life as a gamer or vice versa. To lead a healthy relationship with your spouse, all you need is to straighten out your priorities and make the right decisions with the time you have.
