Japan-Only PS5 Digital Edition Gives Sony Hardware Sales A Major Shot In The Arm

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s decision to release a Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition seems to be paying off nicely, as sales of the PS5 family of consoles have seen a major spike in sales in Japan this past week.

The 55,000 yen PS5 Digital Edition contributed to Sony’s flagship console – that is, all available versions of the system on sale in the country – reach 36,983 units in weekly sales, according to the latest Famitsu data. The PS5 Digital Edition was the best-selling iteration of the PS5 with 23,381 units sold, followed by PS5 Pro and the standard PS5 with 11,367 and 2,235 units sold, respectively, for the week.

The PS5 Digital Edition (Japan Only) was announced during Sony’s most recent State of Play broadcast, where it was revealed the console would ship on November 21. It’s a cheaper version of the existing PS5 Digital Edition, coming it at around $355 and features “Console Language: Japan only” on the box, making it clear it is intended only for the Japanese market.
