John Romero has revealed that he is still not giving up on resurrecting his unannounced shooter that was dropped by Xbox earlier in the year.
In case you haven’t been keeping up, Romero Games confirmed back in July that funding for the in-development project had been pulled and the project canned. However, while rumours soon spread online that the studio had been closed in wake of Microsoft’s then-recent layoffs, the studio quickly moved to dispel these reports and confirmed the developer remained operational.
In addition, the statement revealed that they had been contacted by “several publishers interested in helping us bring the game across the finish line.” Now, in a new statement, Romero revealed that the team is “still figuring out what we’re going to do” with the project.

Well, we’re still figuring out what we’re going to do with our big game. We own the IP, we own the code, we own everything about the game, right? So we have a lot of companies that are interested and still working with us on it, because when you develop a game for years and you put in, say, $50 million into a game, if you move and start working with somebody else, they get $50 million for free.
Lots of people want to continue working on something, you know, and even if that doesn’t happen, you have $50 million worth of assets that you can use to make another thing. So no matter what, you are shortcutting the end of your game, right? To be able to get your game done faster, you already have a lot there already.
Romero Games was formed in August 2025 by John and Brenda Romero, and is the ninth studio that the Doom and Quake creator has founded during his career. So far the company has released four games: Dangerous Dave in the Deserted Pirate’s Hideout HD, Gunamn Taco Truck, SIGIL, Empire of Sin, and SIGIL 2.
