Lies of P developer Neowiz has started catching a lot of flak following the reveal of a job listing that reveals the studio is looking for an AI artist, which seems like an oxymoron personally but is something the company is nonetheless looking to bolster its ranks.
The job description reveals a clear push towards generative AI for the Korean studio, which Neowiz wants to use to come up with textures and “create assets,” as well as utilising Stable Diffusion and Midjourney to cobble together “concept drafts” for characters and environments. Furthermore, the position will be expected to train “unique AI models” to craft the visual identity of the project.
Naturally this has attracted a lot of criticism online as no one really wants to see AI used heavily in video games nowadays as the expense of human workers, although it’s becoming more commonplace regardless of how you feel about it. Just recently, Sony outlined its plans for AI use in video game development, but was clear that it wouldn’t be replacing human creativity.
Indeed, AI can be helpful for completing mundane tasks to free up human resources into other areas, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing; however, when it effectively replaces the major human creative process – be it art, voice lines or building worlds – then people understandably take issue with its use in game design.
As for Lies of P, the original game was well-received and something many are eager to see flourish as its own franchise. You can read our full verdict on the game here.
