Marathon Fails To Turn Things Around Despite Launch Of Season 2 And Recent Free Week

Bungie’s Marathon doesn’t seem to have managed to turn things around following the launch of Season 2 and its Free Week, according to a report on Forbes.

Marathon saw 40,000 concurrent peak players when Season 2 launched, which was less than half the figure during its paid release. However, Bungie’s shooter lost players each subsequent day, including the weekend, resulting in the game recording 18,000 players a night by the end of the free week. Forbes notes that Marathon peaked at 12,753 players the night of June 15.

This figure is almost identical to what Marathon was puling in prior to the launch of Season 2, which was around 11,000 – 12,000 players. The game took two months to hit this low baseline after Season 1 launch, but has now returned to that figure in just two weeks. Beyond that, public-facing data reveals that Marathon is sitting at 116 in the Steam top sellers, and is at 157 in daily users.

Back in May, Sony Interactive Entertainment posted a $765 impairment loss due to Bungie’s underperformance during FY25. The studio recently announced that it was ending development on Destiny 2, although it hasn’t yet confirmed what its next project will be.

Marathon was released for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S in March 2026, and you can read our review here. Furthermore, if you’re interested more in Season 2, then read our impressions for more info.
