Something fairly magical arrived at my place yesterday. I arrived home from taking my kids to the park, and sitting on my front porch, there it was. The Marvel’s Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Edition, in all of its shiny glory. I got ridiculously excited and scurried into the house to crack it open and see what goodies were hiding inside.
I’ve been playing Marvel’s Avengers for review (coming soon, I promise), and I’ve been enjoying the game quite a bit. Sure, it has a few issues, but it isn’t nearly the disaster that it could have been. There is a good strong framework here for Crystal Dynamics to work with for quite some time to come. So yes, I’m a fan of this game – the campaign is just a blast – so I was delighted to see what treasures await other fans that invest in this rather beefy high-end edition of the game.
Marvel’s Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Edition Unboxing
Hey, Where’s The Video?
Okay, okay, I have to admit that I didn’t make a video. My overly excited kids were being way too loud, and my usual camera man is off at university. There’s no way I can ask my wife to help, as I can’t stand for her see me tear up while I’m cradling a Captain America statue in my arms like a lost baby. So instead I took a bunch of pictures.
The Marvel’s Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Edition comes in a box big enough to house an entire PS4 – in fact, for a moment that’s what I thought it was, and I completely lost my mind. I hadn’t heard of an Avengers Special Edition PS4, but hey, I don’t hear everything that happens. But after shaking the box a little, I realized that it was way too light to actually contain a system. Still was fun to imagine though, and the awesome stuff inside quickly made me forget my thoughts of having another system around the house.
Sliding off the “dust cover”, I opened the very nicely made box. Pulling back a few layers of packaging, I revealed a steel-book edition of the game (now I can play with my wayward cameraman-at-university son!), and a very nice 5×7 print of young Kamala Khan posing with her heroes at A-Day. This image is used very effectively in the game’s campaign, which I had just finished about two hours before this package arrived, so I was delighted to see it. I am going to frame it and sneak it onto the family photo wall, where it will remain until my wife notices and takes it back down.
I pulled this layer back, revealing…
The two centerpiece items in the collection – the magnificent Captain America statue, and the equally awesome Hulk bobble-head. The Cap statue pretty much speaks for itself – it is 12′ tall, and is painted in ridiculous detail. That right hand is actually holding the helmet in place, which is a really cool touch. The Hulk bobble-head is actually featured in the game for just a small – but memorable – moment. Please note the “Love, Tony” inscription, which is a fantastic detail that speaks volumes to the two characters’ relationship in the game.
The Rest Of The Stuff
All in all, you get the Kamala Khan pic, the game itself (with the dope steel-book case), the Cap statue, the Hulk Bobble-head, and a few more key items to round out the collection. These include a very nice (and solidly made) Black Widow belt buckle, a key-chain-size replica of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir (super heavy and definitely made of metal), a very nice – and also very solid – A-Day commemorative pin, and an Iron Man technical spec / blueprint wall hanging. Not a bad haul at all, frankly, and every item thoughtfully fits in with the overall spirit of the game and its characters.
Playing through the campaign of Marvel’s Avengers, I quickly locked in on these versions of the classic Avengers. Before long, you forget that they don’t look like the movie actors, and simply accept them as the beloved characters that you’ve known all your life. The creators of Marvel’s Avengers captured the spirit of these characters, and as comic book fans know, the look is secondary. These folks change physical appearance all the time in the various media in which they appear. Having this memorabilia helps to make the experience of playing the game that much more tangible and real. This is a delightful collection of items.
So what did I do with all this stuff? Well…let’s just say that Cap has a new home watching over my wife’s houseplants with a buddy…
