Super Mario Maker for Nintendo Wii U has failed to capture the top spot on the U.K. All Format Chart thanks to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which sits comfortably in pole position despite a 78 percent drop in sales.
Nintendo’s plucky plumber, who recently celebrated his 30th birthday in the industry, had to settle for second place. It did, however, perform strongly enough to become Wii U’s fourth best-selling game in term of week-one sales.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is available now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360. Read our review here. The stealth-action title is the final game in the series from creator Hideo Kojima, who is cutting ties with Konami after a bitter falling out.
The game debuted at no.1 following its launch on September 1, with the bulk of copies being sold on PS4. It also recorded the fifth best week-one sales of the franchise in Japan. Sadly, The Phantom Pain’s launch wasn’t without hiccups, with a notorious save bug causing more than a few problems for gamers. A patch is currently in the works.
Despite being Kojima-san’s final Metal Gear Solid title, Konami has confirmed that it has plans to continue the franchise without him. Pleasingly, it’s not the end of Kojima-san’s career as a video game creator, and the legendary designer has made it clear he has ‘no regrets‘ over the whole affair.
