Sea Of Thieves, Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment were previously Xbox exclusive titles – until they weren’t – because earlier this year Microsoft revealed a shift in its strategy to grow its platform.
A big part of that shift is now shipping some of its previously exclusive titles on other platforms, PS5 and PS4 included. So far, the success of that seems to be clear, particularly with Sea Of Thieves which has enjoyed time as the number one pre-ordered game on PlayStation ahead of its release and was the most downloaded game on PS5 for May 2024.
At least it looks like a success from this side of the table, and Microsoft seems to agree, as president of games and studios at Microsoft Gaming Matt Booty said in a recent interview with Variety that team green has been “really pleased” with sales for these games on other platforms.
Booty didn’t expand on what that means exactly, and when pressed about what other games will cease from being Xbox exclusive he repeated the line we’ve heard before that things are being evaluated on a “case-by-case” basis.
Of course that doesn’t rule out the ‘case’ that all of Xbox’s biggest games become multi-platform. It’ll be interesting to see how quickly ‘case-by-case’ becomes simply everything being multi-platform with timed exclusivity on Xbox platforms, or if Xbox does stand its ground on some exclusives.
