Microsoft Teams With AMD For Next-Gen Hardware Lineup After Sony Says PS6 Is ‘Top Of Mind’

Microsoft has overnight announced its next-generation Xbox hardware plans, which involves a multi-year partnership with chip manufacturer AMD – the same technology that is also powering the PS6.

Speaking in a video, Xbox boss Sarah Bond revealed that Microsoft’s next-generation hardware plans will ensure that players are able to experience games across devices ‘anywhere you want,’ and that they won’t be limited to a single store or one device.

I am thrilled to share we’ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices including our next-generation Xbox consoles, in your living room, and in your hands.

Together with AMD we’re advancing the state of art in gaming silicon to deliver the next generation of graphics innovation to unlock a deeper level of visual quality and immersive gameplay and player experiences enhanced with the power of AI, all while maintaining compatibility with your existing library of Xbox games. This is all about building you a gaming platform that’s always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want, delivering you an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device.

As previously reported, Hideaki Nishino, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said during the company’s recent Business Segment Meeting that there’s “huge interest in our next generation console strategy,” and that the “future of the platform is top of mind.” Sony announced last year that it had teamed with AMD for Project Amethyst, which is set to define its PS6 strategy — the console is heavily rumoured to utilise the company’s 3D stacked chips.
