Modern Warfare 3 almost didn’t have a website

Activision recently discovered that the proper domain name for their upcoming shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had already been taken.

An individual by the name of Anthony Abraham had registered the domain name through GoDaddy.com legitimately, and was using it to redirect to the official Battlefield 3 website to both promote BF3 and to belittle Modern Warfare 3. Activision complained to GoDaddy.com, but they did not intervene and allowed the site to go live.

In retaliation, Activision took Abraham to court to claim the domain name. Abraham argued that the words "modern warfare" were generic and had no copyright appeal. However, since EA did not have direct involvement in the site, Abraham had no proper backing, and was forced to surrender the domain name to Activision. The terms of the deal were not released.

The domain name for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is still, as to be expected, www.modernwarfare3.com, and the game will launch as planned on November on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
