Mortal Kombat could be 2011’s best-selling fighter, says Ed Boon

Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, reckons this year’s eponymous reboot in the blood-filled series has a chance at coming out on top as the best-selling brawler of 2011.

Speaking during a chinwag with MCV, Boon observed that the MK series sells just as well as if not better than its contemporaries, and believes the latest entry does a fine job of catering to fans craving for that quintessential, mature-rated punch-up.

"This is the first mature-rated Mortal Kombat to come out in about four or five years. I believe the last game created a hunger for many players to see Mortal Kombat return to its original roots and that’s exactly what we are doing with this one," said Boon.

"Mortal Kombat sells as well as or better than our rival fighters do. We’ve seen some of our competitors sell fewer units with each iteration of their games because they are not offering something dramatically different from the last version. While they are still great games, they are basically the same great game with better looking graphics," he added.

"Mortal Kombat has been around over 18 years and we believe this version will be one of the best selling of them all – perhaps the best selling fighter of this year."

Mortal Kombat is due for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in April.
