Hot on the heels of the Mortal Kombat movie reboot finding its Kano and Sonya, the production has now cast an additional two characters for the film in the shape of Scorpion and Shang Tsung. Chin Tan, who starred in Marco Polo, will assume the role of the evil sorcerer, while Westworld’s Hiroyuki Sanada will play the spear-wielding undead warrior.
Scorpion & Shang Tsung Cast In Mortal Kombat Movie
Mortal Kombat movie reboot cast has swelled rapidly lately, with a number of classic game characters confirmed to appear including Liu Kang, Jax, Mileena, Kano, Sonya, and Sub-Zero. In addition, the part of Raiden is looking to be filled by Tadanobu Asano.
Mortal Kombat is slated to hit cinemas on March 5, 2021 with Aquaman and Saw’s James Wan taking on production duties, while Simon McQuaid is hopping into the director’s chair. The script is being penned by Greg Russo, and will apparently focus on a Philadelphia boxer who entered the eponymous tournament, the outcome of which will determine the fact of our world.
Fixing is scheduled to kick off later this year in Australia with a production budget set at £38 million.
It’s been a long time coming too, as the movie has been stuck in development hell for over a decade now. The Mortal Kombat franchise previously took to the big screen back in 1995 with Paul W.S. Anderson’s Mortal Kombat, and was followed by the dismal Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997.
In the meantime, it’s probably worth checking out the latest entry in the video game series, Mortal Kombat 11, which is out now for PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. Read our review of the fighting game sequel here.
While video game movies are usually a load of rubbish, it at least sounds like the Mortal Kombat reboot is going to support a wide range of classic characters, which bodes well for fans. How the story shapes up is something else entirely, though.
