The Mortal Kombat movie hit HBO Max and cinemas in the US last Friday, and suffice to say it’s done pretty well. In fact, the gory martial arts flick as surpassed expectations, posting the biggest box office weekend during the pandemic.
That’s according to Deadline, which reveals the latest big screen adaptation for Mortal Kombat pulled in $22.5 million, which is the biggest haul for an R-rated film in the US during the coronavirus pandemic.
A total of $52.9 million was generated over the weekend when MK’s figures are combined with Funimation’s Demon Slayer, making for an 180% increase over the previous period and the largest box office weekend takings since the middle of March 2020.
Warner Bros. had reportedly expected first-weekend revenue of around $15 million for Mortal Kombat, so the figure posted above obviously suppressed that.

Last week, it was revealed that actor Joe Taslim had signed up for four Mortal Kombat movies, so hopefully these early figures are an indication of things to come, thus securing a green light for a sequel.
The original Mortal Kombat movie was released in 1995 and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and went on to gross $120 million worldwide.
