Need for Speed may not return as an annualised series going forward

Electronic Arts has yet to make a decision as to whether the Need for Speed franchise will resume its annual release schedule, its chief operating officer has said.

Speaking with MCV, Peter Moore said that the publishing giant is waiting to see how this year’s entry in the venerable street racing franchise performs before making any decisions.

"I don’t know if it will be, it’s an interesting question," said Moore, when quizzed if Need for Speed could be released annually once more. "We will see how this game goes. You can only bring it out annually if you can come up with real fresh ideas.

"It is the same thing we’ve been going through with golf," he continued. "It is golf… is there enough innovation and creativity that you can go in there with and do something different every year?"

Ghost Games is developing this year’s Need for Speed, which is to act as something of a reboot for the series. No new games in the franchise were released in 2014, making it the first time in 13 years that EA hasn’t released a title on an annualised basis.

Need for Speed has already generated a lot of hype since its unveiling earlier this year, and the game’s engine is capable of producing some life-like visuals as you can see. The game’s map, a fictional Los Angeles, is twice as big as 2013’s Need for Speed Rivals.
