Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot has said that the ‘revolutionary’ new Assassin’s Creed title will only launch when it’s ready, indicating a 2017 release may not necessarily be on the cards.
Speaking with GameSpot, Guillemot confirmed that a new entry in the multi-million selling stealth-action franchise is the works, but wouldn’t commit to a firm release window.
"It will be back when it’s ready. That’s when we feel we have something there," he said.
"What we saw in the development of the next [Assassin’s Creed] was that we had an opportunity to take it to another level," Guillemot added. "So we said we’ll take all the time it takes to make the experience fantastic. It was feasible because we have other games. There’s a huge potential in this game to revolutionise the IP, so we said, ‘Let’s make sure we change our model so we have more time and that we can bring back a greater experience.
Quizzed as to how revolutionary the game will actually be, Guillemot kept details case to his chest: ”It’s difficult to say right now. You’ll actually make up your mind on that when you see it,” he said.
Ubisoft confirmed earlier this year that the Assassin’s Creed franchise would be taking a break in 2016 as far as mainline instalments go. Rumors have suggested the new game will be titled Assassin’s Creed Empires, and will kick start a brand new trilogy.
Despite this, Assassin’s Creed is very much alive in 2016, with the spin-off Assassin’s Creed Chronicles series wrapping up earlier this year, while the Assassin’s Creed Ezio Collection is scheduled to launch in November for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
If that wasn’t enough, the Michael Fassbender-starring Assassin’s Creed film is due to hit cinemas in December.
