Far Cry Primal is the next chapter in the multi-million selling open-world franchise, although it is the first to step away from a contemporary setting, instead taking place during the Stone Age. As such, Primal eschews traditional gameplay elements such as vehicles and firearms, instead arming players with primitive weapons such as axes and spears to fend off enemies.

Set in the hostile land of Oros, Primal casts players in the role of Takkar, a formidable hunter who must rise to become the leader of a tribe while battling rival tribes and blood-thirsty creatures, including saber-toothed cats and wolves. Primal includes a day/night cycle and allows gamers to craft items and tame the local wildlife, while Takkar’s pet Owl can be used to scout the area via the player’s control.

One of the key features from previous games that won’t be featured in Primal is co-op, with Ubisoft explaining that it wants to focus on a single-player component this time around. The game world is said to be as large as Far Cry 4.

Far Cry Primal is due out on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One and is scheduled for release worldwide on February 23. Read our hands-on preview of the game here to see how it’s shaping up.
