Square Enix’s forthcoming new MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, will not feature experience points or a leveling system, according to a video interview published by Famitsu. Instead of a traditional MMO or RPG leveling process, players will progress more naturally based on their experiences in game, with an emphasis on character growth, explained FFXIV’s director Nobuaki Komoto.
While we can expect a lot of changes to Square’s previous MMO Final Fantasy XI, the new game will hold onto its predecessor’s job system. Jobs in FFXI allow players to create various character classes. The focus in FFXIV is on the weapons, which will determine how you play and how you fight.
When FFXIV launches next year, you can expect to be immersed in a “high fantasy” world with similar races that are found in FFXI. Komoto said the new title will provide solo and group play options, and a rich soundtrack from Nobuo Uematsu. He said Square Enix is creating a world of “new possibilities that redefine the MMO.”
