BioWare has confirmed that the upcoming Mass Effect Andromeda will eschew the series’ traditional Paragon/Renegade dialogue choices.
Speaking during an interview with Official Xbox Magazine, Mac Walters, Creative Director on Mass Effect Andromeda, explained that the original trilogy featured options that were very much aligned with Commander Shepard’s character, something that obviously isn’t necessary this time around.
Walters explained that Paragon and Renegade have been removed, "because they felt very Shepard–they were very tied to the Shepard character, so they didn’t really make sense if we weren’t going to have Shepard as our main protagonist."
Mass Effect Andromeda sex scenes will be pretty good
"What we have now is based more around agreeing and disagreeing," he added. "The reason I like that is because in the trilogy it’s like, ‘I’m gonna play Paragon,’ and then you know which way you’re moving the stick on every conversation. You don’t have to think about it, because you’re just going to hit Paragon every time."
Walters explained that this new system encourages players to pay more attention to what’s being said, rather than hooked by the lure of binary (if no less amusing, in Shepard’s case of booting people out of windows) moral choices.
"With agree and disagree it changes by the circumstance and it changes by the character you’re talking to," Walters said, "so you have to actually be more engaged in what’s going on, to know if you’re going to do that."
Mass Effect Andromeda release date
The latest entry in the Mass Effect franchise is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One in the U.S. on March 21 and in Europe on March 23. The game takes place some six hundred years after the events of the original trilogy, and sees players exploring the titular Andromeda universe as newcomer Ryder; a ‘pathfinder’ tasked with finding a new home for humanity.
Like Mass Effect 3, this latest installment in the sci-fi RPG series will support multiplayer, although there’s been some changes since we last visited the franchise. Publisher Electronic Arts is expecting some pretty major sales from Andromeda during its first week.
